What Nut Material Should I Choose: POM, POK, or PEEK

POM, POK, and PEEK are all engineering plastics commonly used for nuts in motion and transmission systems, but they differ significantly in mechanical performance, wear resistance, temperature resistance, chemical stability, and cost. The right nut material should be selected according to the application’s load, speed, working environment, and budget.

POM (Polyoxymethylene) is a widely used engineering plastic known for its good dimensional stability, low friction coefficient, and smooth sliding performance. It offers good machinability and cost efficiency, making it suitable for general-purpose nut applications. POM nuts are commonly used in systems that require stable operation, relatively low noise, and moderate load capacity. However, compared with higher-performance materials, POM has more limited resistance to high temperature, heavy load, and long-term severe wear.

POK (Polyketone) is a newer high-performance engineering plastic with excellent wear resistance, impact strength, and fatigue resistance. Compared with POM, POK generally provides better durability and longer service life under repeated motion and continuous load conditions. It also performs well in nut applications where low wear and stable mechanical performance are important. In many cases, POK is considered a strong upgrade option over POM when higher reliability and longer life are required, while still keeping cost lower than PEEK.

PEEK  is a premium high-performance engineering plastic with outstanding mechanical strength, heat resistance, wear resistance, and chemical resistance. It maintains stable performance in harsh operating environments, including high temperature, high load, and chemically aggressive conditions. PEEK nuts are typically used in high-end or demanding applications such as precision equipment, medical systems, semiconductor equipment, and other environments where material performance is critical. Its main limitation is cost, which is significantly higher than both POM and POK.
